Press conference on European Parliament resolution on Darfur. Simon Coveney MEP
13/02/2007
Up to 400,000 people have been killed and more than 2.5 million displaced or made homeless due to fighting between the Sudanese regular forces, pro-government militia and rebels in the last three last years. The European Parliament is calling on the international community to intervene in this human tragedy, starting with action at UN level.
The main thrust of the resolution, on the initiative of the EPP-ED Group and the ALDE Group, calls on the UN to set a clear date for the deployment of a UN-supported peacekeeping force in Darfur, even in the absence of consent or agreement of the Sudanese Government, under the UN's 'responsibility to protect'.
Simon Coveney (EPP-ED, Ireland) and Philippe Morillon (ALDE, France) will outline the Parliament's resolution on Darfur at a cross-political group press conference on Wednesday 14 February 2007 at 4pm in the press conference room LOW N-1/201, Strasbourg.
MEPs from the main political groups have all supported the resolution, and will participate in the press conference
