NEWS FLASH!
As this alert was queued to go out, Africa Action got word of a very serious situation and the opportunity to take action to protect a man from torture. Suleiman Jamous, the 60-year-old humanitarian coordinator for the SLA (Sudan Liberation Army), was detained by Minni Minawi's faction of the SLA on May 20th. Amnesty International reports that others held by the same faction in the past have been tortured or killed. UN and African Union monitors have been unable to gain access and Amnesty International and others are now gravely concerned for the man's safety. Take Action NOW!
Suleiman Jamous has often spoken out against the increasingly dictatorial behavior of the SLA's leaders. As the SLA "humanitarian coordinator" he was in charge of distributing food aid in SLA-controlled areas. Mini Minawi's faction of the SLA supports the Darfur Peace Agreement, which he and the government of Sudan signed on May 5th. Other SLA factions and most of those displaced by Janjaweed militias have opposed the agreement, because they do not believe it will give them compensation and security to return home. The men who seized Suleiman Jamous reportedly told him to sign the agreement.
What Minawi is lacking in popular support is now being compensated for in international support. As he was the only rebel leader to sign the Darfur Peace Agreement, he is being bolstered by the international community, especially the United States. The United States needs to demand in no uncertain terms that Minawi must release Suleiman Jamous. The U.S. needs to give Minawi a clear message: a peace agreement built on detaining and torturing those who disagree with it can never be supported either by Darfurians on the ground or the international community that is working on their behalf.
Suleiman has been gone for nearly three weeks; the situation becomes more critical with each passing day. You can take action now by writing to Michael Rannenberger, the Head of the Sudan Group at the State Department.
Thank you for taking action and we hope to see you at one of the vigils in Washington DC, New York, Dallas or San Francisco.
Regards,
Africa Action Staff

Crisis in Darfur: What Comes Next?
Recent developments have shattered hopes that the May peace deal between Kartoum and Dafur's largest rebel faction would lead to an end of violence in the war-torn region. The failure of key rebel leaders to join the agreement has stalled the process and conditions continue to deteriorate on the ground. Please join our distinguished panel to consider the next steps in addressing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
