Ali Abdel-Latif
(By Merfi (sudan net
On October 29, 1948 the Hero Ali Abdel-Latif passed away peacefully in his bed. In his memory I am reproducing this easy I posted first in April 6, 2000 and then every October 29th almost every year (with little modification).
Ali Abdel-Latif is the father of modern Sudanese resistance. Today's call for a New Sudan based on equality and justice can be traced back to what Ali and his colleagues advocated for. They called for unity among all Sudanese; liberation; justice and questioned the establishment about who should represent the Sudanese people. Challenging traditional leadership then was like committing suicide.
How far are we today from the vision of Ali and his colleagues? May God rest their souls in peace?
And in his first memory special salute goes to the other hero of New Sudan, Dr. John Garang DeMabior. I hope it won’t take 60 years each time for such leaders to show up! Yet, you Sudanese should be proud that your nation will always give birth to leaders like Ali Abdel-Latif and John G. DeMabior among many others.
************************************************** ***********
The badly beaten hero was brought for more interrogation. He was just alone, surrounded by all the security agents of the colonial super power. He was worn-out, in pain and held against his will. Blood all over his body but his spirit was not broken
What is your tribe? Yelled the officer.
"I am a Sudanese," said Ali with a weak voice. Spank, Whip, Whip, blood all over the place…pause.
What is your tribe? Yelled the officer again…
"I am a Sudanese" said Ali with a weaken voice. Smack, Whip, the hero fell down unconscious.
Ali was supposed to identify with his tribe, not the Sudanese citizenship. That is how the British wanted and planned it. Identification with tribes was supposed to weaken the national consciousness. Different ethnic groups were not allowed to identify themselves as related to each other. That helps division. Ali and his fellas were just smarter than that. His group included northerners, westerners, easterners and southerners. They paid for the price of unity, themselves.
The spirit of the fallen but not broken Hero flew to reach the Lumumb's of Congo; the Nyrery's of Tanzania; the Nikroma's of Ghana; the Nasir's of Egypt; the Ben Bella's of Algeria; the Mandela' of South Africa and the King's of Alabama in the USA. You cannot fight AS a color and race; you fight as a humanbeing. You do not fight color, race, religion or people; YOU fight INJUSTICE. Only then they won the battles and Ali gets the credit for the thought. It was only in the 1920s then; in a place called the Sudan. To those who attach leadership to things other than will, Leadership needs vision and determination; people's ethnic/religious backgrounds are neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for a sound and competent leadership. And who told you the southerners can’t lead. They led when it counted. Ali did.
Sudanese should be proud to "identify" with the likes of Ali and his colleagues. They brought glory to themselves and to their country. If we can only learn the good lessons of our rich history.
