و هذا نص الخطاب الذي أرسل الي السكرتير العام للأمم المتحدة السيد كوفي عنان
A letter to H. E. Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the UN from the Sudanese Marginalized Forces Forum for Peace and Development, The Sudan Human Rights Organization, the Group Against Torture in Sudan and the Sudanese opposition groups Washington, DC April 6, 2005
His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan Secretary General, United Nations New York
We, the members of the Sudanese Marginalized Forces Forum for Peace and Development (SMFFPD), The Sudan Human Rights Organization (SHRO), the Group Against Torture in Sudan (GATS) and Sudanese opposition groups express our unequivocal support to the UN Security Council resolution number 1593 issued on March 31st, 2005 to prosecute 51 Sudanese war crimes suspects identified by the UN commission, before the International Criminal Court. Furthermore, we consider this resolution as a landmark achievement in the history of the United Nations and as the French ambassador to UN eloquently described it “ ..a turning point, for it is sending the message beyond Darfur to all of those criminals responsible for crimes against humanity and war crimes who all too often believed that they were beyond the pale of justice," What matters now is that the international community has to take this resolution seriously, put it into force in order to help promote effective accountability for the sake of the world peace and stability. Darfur province, the biggest and most populous region has been devastated by the Janjaweed and the Sudanese government forces who massacred over 200,000 people, set fires on thousands of villages, raped women and displaced over 2 million people who fled to neighboring country of Chad and to major cities of Darfur. Thousands of people in Darfur continue to die each month from violence, hunger and disease due to destructive role of the Sudanese government in Darfur crisis. The Janjaweed militia, who committed wide-scale abuses against the African population in Darfur region, is not the only culprit. The ICC should consider the Sudanese government as the main instigator and culprit. In a speech broadcasted last Saturday on Sudanese radio and TV, the Sudanese President, Omer Elbashir stated that he will never give up any Sudanese national for trial outside Sudan and insisted that the Sudanese justice system is good enough to try any Sudanese for crimes. In an attempt to cover up its heinous crimes, the Sudanese government has finally brought some unknown individuals for a theatrical trial to protect the real culprits of the regime and escape from the international Criminal Court trials. We strongly condemn the irresponsible act of President Elbashir for not adhering to the international will and demand the immediate cooperation with the international community and surrender of the suspects to the ICC.
We call upon the Sudanese people to organize themselves and work together to expose all criminals to the world and demand their trials by the ICC. Among those criminals are the head of state, General Omer Elbashir, his deputy Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, the Interior Minister Abdelrahim Mohamed Hussain, Minister of Defense Bakri Hassan Salih, Minister of Energy Awad Eljaz, Dr. Nafie Ali Nafie, and many others whom are known to the UN commission. Any trial that doesn’t include these culprits will be a shortsighted decision and will never avert the mass killings in Darfur region and other regions of Sudan.
We call upon the UN Security Council and the international community to put this historic resolution into effect, as it will help the Sudanese people in restoring a civilian and a democratic state that respects their human rights. The resolution, if applied properly, will be the most effective tool to get rid of outlawed and pariah nations and put an end to tyranny and human sufferings.
