SUPPLYING EASTERN SUDAN WITH POTABLE WATER IS JUSTICE NOT A CHARITY by Adaroub Sedna Onour

For decades at stretch, Port Sudan and other coastal cities of eastern Sudan suffered a cute water shortage, mainly because of the incessant swarms of economic migrants from mainland Sudan and its neighboring countries to the relatively stable and conflict-free region. That exodus put a huge pressure on the already meager public utilities and services, which were bad even without such waves of migrants. Port Sudan, which is Sudan’s main sea-gateway for all Sudan’s imports and exports to the outside world, was the hardest –hit. The arid sea-strip wedged between Egypt, Eritrea and main-land Sudan provides services as the main sea-port for Sudan in addition to its being a regional transit port and Trans -shipment hub for the neighboring landlocked countries (Ethiopia and Chad) together with the tiny harbor of suakin, which, too suffers from chronic water shortage? The problem in Sudan as a whole, is not lack of money , but the misuse of it by the corrupt regime in power ,which is made up of allied friends, families and dominant ethnic groups who have no intention of sharing the country’s wealth and power with others from marginalized regions of Sudan on equal terms ? They not only pocket all the revenues made from the national resources, but they consider other parts of Sudan as cash cows, assuming that all their resources should, too ,be at their disposal? That group has no sense of patriotism at all, that if they failed to manage any crisis they simply choose the easiest solution, abandonment …. Even if it led to succession as in the case of south Sudan (no body knows which region is going to be next in line?) take Port Sudan, which gives a glaring example of conscious state- negligence, because its water problem can easily be solved by erecting a couple of desalination plants or, preferably, by implementing the river Nile water transfer scheme, as is the case in neighboring Egypt, where numberless ,densely-populated towns get their water needs from the Nile, without the much cry and little wool we are hearing here in Sudan…but the problem is simply shelved ? Paradoxically though , port Sudan is capable of financing the vital scheme relying on its own resources and funds generated from schemes situated in its vicinity e.g. eco-tourism ,marine activities such like diving –sports ,sea - journeys to one of the picturesque coral reefs allover the world ,revenues of the sea-ports and custom fees, etc . in addition to the still-being-looted tons of gold extracted from ARIAB-MINES , which are likely to stop production after decades of exhaustive exploitation (without any substantial benefit for the region or its people?) the fun is that ,such lucrative schemes are classified as (federal schemes/corporations??)And are, thus, headquartered in Khartoum, where armies of doing-nothing directors parasitize on them????? More ridiculous yet, is the sea-ports and container –inspection terminals being in Khartoum ,which is not a sea-port town , as an odd out case and second to none in the whole world (I say this as a seaman and a Towner from port Sudan) basically ,all persistent and potential disputes in Sudan stem from such conflict-initiating policies. The lack of political will and interest peculiar of the rotten ruling groups of Khartoum will add fuel to the fire and jeopardize the very existence of Sudan itself. I wonder, what makes an easily deliverable service such as drinking-water an insoluble dilemma in the second town of Sudan? Is it that difficult to secure grants or soft loans from any donor or country to solve this chronic problem? Is the regime sufficiently conscious of the mounting tribalism and regionalism, and the devastating impact that could pose on the social cohesion? Or the equally horrifying indicators of social malaise (hunger, poverty, discrimination, racial hatred and illicit drugs abuse etc) what if the people of eastern Sudan took away their furies to neighboring countries and even beyond, not in pursuit of happiness but to silence their thirst in dignity ? Does the regime know that the main source of water for Port Sudan (arbaat dam) will be filled to the brim with silt in seven years time … according to a recent study conducted by a reputable international consultancy group? Why such a town of great geostrategic importance is denied the use of its own resources to solve its chronic problem of water shortage,( if we agreed to federal funds being allocated to more pressing priorities?)it is feared that, Water will soon become a home-security issue, taking into consideration the ever-expanding Egyptian occupation coupled with the heavy Eritrean presence. …And with sizeable beja communities in both countries, it is advisable to extinguish the heating unresolved issues of eastern Sudan with WATER before it is too late Adaroub sedna onour
