PHOTOS: REBEL CONFLICT IN S. DARFUR TOWN
|
Rebels Report Government Attack in South Darfur Town Medecins sans Frontires, also known as Doctors Without Borders, the sole international aid group in an embattled Darfur rebel town, is pulling out due to the pervasive insecurity. In Muhajeria, south Darfur, Sudan, unconfirmed reports say a militia attack has killed dozens, the regional director of MSF said Wednesday. The aid group counted at least 39 severely injured people, mostly civilians, in the town of Muhajeria before it had to evacuate, adding that it could not confirm rebel statements that more than 48 people had been killed.

Rebels Report Government Attack in South Darfur Town The Sudanese military denied Tuesday that it was involved in an attack on the rebel-controlled town in Darfur. Meanwhile, regarding rebel reports of 48 deaths, the head of MSF-Holland for South Darfur, Banu Altanbas, said, "There were casualties reported to us, but we couldn't verify them."

The town, a stronghold of the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) Minni Minnawi faction, the only rebel group to sign the May 2006 Darfur Peace Agreement, experienced heavy fighting Tuesday in which the SLA claimed that more than 50 people were killed. The clashes left many homes burnt to the ground and shops destroyed and looted. (Stuart Price/AMIS/Reuters)
