----- Original Message ----- From: "Kåre Bækgård" To: Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2006 2:59 PM Subject: contact information to Mr. Omar
Dear sir I am writing on a novel, and am trying to find a person, who has knowledge about the tribal nations of Sudan. I have found the online discussion board of Sudan Online, but as a non-member, I cannot participate. On the following link, there is a person, who seems to be very knowledgeable about tribal relations - a Mr. Omar
Crossing the barriers….. Got to know them better…. I would like to be able to somehow ask him a few questions. Do you have contact information on this person? If not, could I ask you to forward the following to the discussion board? I will then check for answers regularly.
With kind regards
Mr. Kaare Baekgaard
The questions to be forwarded:
Dear Sir
I write to you, as I have noticed, that you have extensive knowledge about the peoples living in Sudan. I hope, I can impose on you as a source of information, and ask your help, for which I would be very grateful.
I am writing a novel, which includes – as a bycharacter – a young woman, who originates from Sudan. I have, alas, little knowledge of the country and its peoples. So I have made a preliminary outline of the character, and I am now trying to ensure, that there is some realism to the figure. The novel takes place in 1983.
In my outline the woman is called Naibani (which in honesty is the only Sudanese name, I know). She is a rural, tribal woman with little or no formal education. She derives from a region, which has traditionally held animistic religious beliefs, but which has – by 1983 – to some degree converted to islam. In order for my story to function, she needs to speak at least a little arabic - and perhaps also know a few english words.
Would such a person exist in Sudan in 1983? What region and village could she belong to? What tribal nationality would she have? On what crops or livestock would the local economy be based? What could her names be - and the names of the members of her family? How would she mourn the death of a close friend? With what frase might she greet a stranger?
I would be in debt to you, if you could answer these questions.
With sincere regards
Mr. Kaare Baekgaard [email protected]
