March 25, 2016 (KHARTOUM) - Security agents at Khartoum airport Friday have prevented journalist Faisal Mohamed Salih from travelling to the United Kingdom (UK).

Veteran Sudanese journalist and analyst Faisal Mohammed Salih speaks to AFP during an interview in Khartoum on May 29, 2012 (File/ AFP)
Salih posted on his Facebook page that he was prevented from travelling to London on Friday morning.

“Security authorities at Khartoum airport at 5:00 am (local time) Friday prevented me from travelling and told me that my name was placed on the travel ban list and my passport was seized,” he said.

He told the non-governmental Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) network that the security agents at Khartoum airport asked him to report to the NISS headquarters on 26 March.

Salih, a strident critic of Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir and his regime’s human rights abuses, has won the Peter Mackler Award for courageous and ethical journalism in 2013.

He was the former editor-in-chief of Al-Adwaa daily and a columnist for several other publications. He is also director of programs at Teeba Press, a non-government organisation that trains journalists in Sudan.

On Wednesday, NISS also banned member of the central committee of the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) Siddiq Youssef from travelling abroad.

Youssef was heading to Cairo and from there he intended to travel to Geneva to attend the discussion of Sudan annual report at the UN Human Rights Council later this month.

Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) continued to ban opposition leaders and political and civil society activists from travelling abroad.

Last November, NISS prevented the member of the Civil Society Initiative (CSI) Babiker Mohamed al-Hassan from travelling to Addis Ababa.

Also, security services at Khartoum airport last December banned SCP leader Mohamed Mokhtar al-Khatib and SCP member Tariq Abdel Majid besides the leader of a Democratic Unionist Party’s faction, Jala al-Azhari from leaving to Paris and confiscated their passports.

    Faisal Saleh
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Faisal Mohamed Saleh is a Sudanese journalist and columnist for several national papers.

Saleh heads Teeba Press, an NGO which trains journalists,[1] and is a former editor of the newspaper Al-Adwa.[2] In the early years of the rule of president Omar al-Bashir, he was detained for several months for his critical reporting of the government.[3] Along with several other journalists, he faced criminal charges in June 2011 after reporting on the alleged rape in custody of activist Safiya Ishag by agents of Sudan's National Security Service.[4]

Saleh gave an interview to Al Jazeera on 19 March 2012 in which he criticized a speech by al-Bashir.[5] Saleh told the interviewer that he felt al-Bashir's government was raising tensions with South Sudan to make it a "scapegoat" for the South Kordofan rebellion in an effort to deflect the administration's own failures to deal with the rebellion's causes. Saleh also argued that the Sudanese government should attempt to solve the crisis with diplomacy rather than force, rather than risk the political and humanitarian consequences of an armed conflict.[6]

On 25 April, Saleh was ordered to report to Sudanese police for questioning; the police reportedly also warned him against speaking further to foreign media.[7] After twelve days of interrogation, Saleh was charged with "crimes against the state" as well as new charges of defamation for his reporting the Safia Ishaag rape case, for which he had been already arrested the previous year.[1]

The arrest led Amnesty International to name him a prisoner of conscience, "imprisoned solely for the peaceful expression of his beliefs".[1] The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information also condemned the arrest, describing it as part of "the severe decline of freedom of opinion and expression and freedom of the press" in Sudan.[8] The Doha Centre for Media Freedom criticized Saleh's interrogations and detention, calling them "harassment" designed "to prevent Saleh from doing his work as a journalist".[9] The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists also called on Sudanese authorities to "release Saleh immediately and stop harassing him."[7] Reporters Without Borders described itself as "outraged at the violence and pressure" against Saleh, describing it as "further proof of the repressive attitude towards the press on the part of the Khartoum government, whose intention is to silence all dissident voices".[2] Front Line Defenders called for the charges against Saleh to be dropped, and stated that they appeared to be "part of an ongoing campaign of judicial harassment and intimidation against the human rights defender".[10] The International Federation of Human Rights called "on the Sudanese authorities to put an end to the judicial harassment faced by Mr. Salih", and launched a letter-writing campaign on his behalf.[11]

A group of journalists held a protest on 17 May in front of the headquarters of Sudan's Press and Publication Council to show solidarity with Saleh and calling for an "end to pre-censorship and restrictions against press and journalists".[12] Saleh's court hearing has been scheduled for 11 June 2012.[10]
