Great Cultural Sudan
|
Is it a new political map of Sudan which consists of three countries: Sudan, Chad and Eritrea? Is it the New Sudan of SPLM in an expanded form? Instead of thinking about the hidden plot to divide Sudan into five countries, can we talk about new lands for Sudan?
A Sudanese historical reference, “al-Tabaqat” narrated many stories about the concept of Sudan during the Sinnari period 1504 – 1828. In the introduction, the author stated that he wrote about Sudan as a country that consists of three states. The author M. Daifallah, although he lived in the Sinnari Sultanate that occupied less than one third of Sudan, his book documented for Islamic saints, scholars and kings alongside the area from Bargou kingdom or “Dar-Selaih” in Chad west of “Dar-Fur”, further to Eritrean coasts. A poet in those days said in a poem about Sudan “From Dar-Selaih to East of Bazza”, a city which located in Eritrea in those days. Before Turku-Egyptian colonization in 1828 there were many kingdoms, Sultanates and Sheikhdoms. All Sudanese territories have its political independence, but if we talk about the country, the land, the people and the Identity there was a sense of unity among all kingdoms, Sultanates and Sheikhdoms. The Southern question in Sudan regrettably has reached its last step now; the referendum will take place in 2011. Some of Sudanese politicians from south or north call for separation; they said that we have no evidences about the existence of one country in the past. In contrast “al-Tabaqat” narrated a story about revolution against the king of Sinnar; the said revolution exploded in the three capitals of the Sultanate: Sinnar, Qarri, and Allis, and the first Sudanese alliance nearly collapsed. The third city, Allis belonged to Shiluck Kingdom. That means the Sinnari alliance was triple one not dual. It was true and pure Sudanese alliance between Northern, Central and Southern Sudan! On the base of all these proofs, I call for a Confederation or Union which consists of Sudan, Chad and Eritrea. It must be secular, because there are three secular states now: South Sudan, Chad and Eritrea. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement has established a good base for the relation between Church and State, therefore no fear from the Islamic State in North Sudan. The confederation should engage immediately in Economic and commercial issues. Now Sudan is an African lion; oil and industrialized country that can help its neighbors.GCS based on a strong historical cultural background. In spite of several trials and plots to separate the Sudanese nation from N'Djamena to Massawa and from Halfa to Nemoly, the common cultural pillars of GCS have survived and remained among people.

Hi Mekki
In principal, I am pro unity and against fragmentation, and I've never been scared by culrural differences, simply because they relects how do you want to use them, to enrich or to separate. However, don't you think this call, at the moment, is superfluous? I mean we are struggling at this moment to keep Sudan in one piece and yet you are calling for a bigger state with so many mines beneath the surface capable of breaking any of them to pieces even before unity? Now to the most awkward bit: Mekki Elmaghrabi promoting secularism? Something must have happened to this world:-)
Regards cousin

Hi Ustaz Mekki, What an interesting idea if it could only be implemented in reality. In fact, I am not that pessimistic about any political or cultural regrouping in Africa but the reality isnt't that great or promissing. From Afar to Zulu within the continent, and from Suakin to Gineina within our own native land, tribalism is the menace and main culprit. Historically at least, the Eritreans were closer to the Ethiopeans in cultural heritage (Abyssinia) and are ethnically intermarried and anthropologically identical than the different corners of the Sudan, aren't they? And what has been happening between the Eritreans and the Ethiopeans for the last forty years or so is no secret. Chad is even worse, second only to Sudan I guess when it comes to the issue of "cultural dysfuctionalism": The Christian Southerners versus the mostly muslim North. Those with connections to Sudan (Zaghawa and the nomadic Baggara)with the Gura'an/Tebo of the North (ethnically and politically associated with Libya) and the plethora of minorities in the Lake Chad Region. Their main problem' like the case in Sudan: Tribalism; which in turn leads to nepotism, cronyism and the deadly virus of corruption as a consequence- the standard dominoes effect and Murphy's Law. What do you think of Sudan now? There is no point in discussing the mess in Sudan I guess. Let's all focus in keeping Sudan intact and save it from political fragmentation and the on-going vicious onslaught of social disintegration, chaotic mayhem and disastrous failure and fallout. Thanks a million. It's a fascinating dream though if The Colonel of the oil-rich Desert Kingdom in the extreme North-West corner of Sudan would give you a chance to realize your legitimate but far-fetched dream.

FROM My Collection ……………………………
Can we make Sudanese Unity a lesson for the world? ………………………………….
* There shall be no discrimination against the use of either Arabic or English at any level of government or stage of education. * The elected President of the Republic shall appoint two Vice Presidents, one from Southern Sudan and the other from Northern Sudan. If the elected President is from the North, the position of the First Vice President shall be filled by the person who has been elected to the post of President of Government of Southern Sudan, as the President's appointee to the said position. * Nationally enacted legislation having effect only in respect of the Northern states of the Sudan shall have as its sources of legislation Islamic Sharia and the consensus of the people. Nationally enacted legislation applicable to Southern Sudan or states of Southern Sudan shall have as its sources of legislation popular consensus, the values and the customs of the people of the Sudan, including their traditions and religious beliefs, having regard to Sudan’s diversity. * The people of Southern Sudan shall either:- (a) confirm unity of the Sudan by voting to sustain the system of government established under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and this Constitution, or (b) vote for secession.)
THE INTERIM NATIONAL CONSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE SUDAN, 2005
My comment:
I do believe that, these selected articles from Sudanese Constitution or Naivasha Agreement are the most important of them all . Other articles existed before in many Sudanese Constitutions. Even Autocratic constitutions all over the world mention democracy and human rights, therefore it is not an achievement to do so. These articles are the core of the constitution or the base of fair and just unity. If Southern Sudanese people choose the choice (a) above the system will be confirmed. Read it carefully do you think you can add or omit a single letter? A Somali journalist told me that Islamic terrorists now dominating Mogadishu, it was not easy at all for Ethiopian troops and CIA agents to fight against them, terrorists from Arab, African and Asian countries gathering now there. Dear readers do you remember the statements of the U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan Scott Gration? He said separation of Sudan will increase terrorism in the region (he means the world). The unity of Sudan became an international community concern not just Sudanese. Analysts say: Muslim minorities in other African and Asian countries will fight for their independence after separation of Sudan, and Muslim World will support them, no one then can stop the catastrophe in more than 20 countries! We can make our unity a world model, people may follow us and we can teach them.
