Colin Jackson Meets Desmond Tutu....see the interview for limited time ..
|
Last month Colin Jackson was lucky enough to meet and interview one of the world's best known and best loved religious leaders - Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu became the first black Anglican Dean of Johannesburg in 1975 and went on to become one of the leading figures in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa during the 1980's. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his work in finding a non-violent solution to South Africa's apartheid. Desmond Tutu was made Archbishop of Cape Town - the head of the South African Anglican Church - in 1986 and used his unique position to continue to battle apartheid. He retired in 1996 - two years after Nelson Mandela became president, so he could concentrate on leading the process of Truth and Reconciliation.
In the film Colin made for this week's Sunday Life the Archbishop talks about his struggles during apartheid and his take on the 'war on terror'. Throughout their chat the Archbishop displays an overwhelming charisma and sense of humour which go some way towards explaining the immense popularity of this incredible man.
Colin joins the Archbishop for Holy Communion at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town - a significant setting as the Cathedral was used by Archbishop Desmond Tutu for many anti-apartheid meetings with other political and religious leaders during the struggle.
