Zuma arrives in Kampala to participate in South Sudan peace process
|
December 22, 2014-Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-South African President Jacob Zuma arrived in Kampala, Uganda on Monday, for the continuation of talks on the South Sudan peace process. Spokesman Mac Maharaj said Zuma would meet President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda. "The consultations and discussions with the two heads of state follow the recent visit to South Africa by President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan, and are aimed at taking forward the peace process," Maharaj said. Uganda plays a critical role in regional efforts to resolve South Sudan’s security situation, despite criticism that the government in Kampala is undermining ongoing peace negotiations between warring factions in Ethiopia. South Sudan has been embroiled in a violent armed struggle since mid-December last year following a political dispute in the country’s ruling party (SPLM). The fighting has splintered the country along tribal lines and led to massive displacement and loss of life. Tens of thousands of people are sheltering inside various UN compounds, while many more have fled as refugees to neighboring countries.
