U.S undertakes to review the economic embargo on Sudan
|
Feb 01, 2015-Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-The economic official at US Embassy in Khartoum, Aiza Miller, has stressed the importance of Gum Arabic good for the American industry in production of food, beverages, medicines, noting the essential role of Sudan in producing this product, stressing that his country is working to import gum directly from Sudan rather than import indirect as in the past. Concluded four-day visit to the Northern Kordofan State accompanied by Secretary General of Sudan’s Gum Arabic Council, Dr. Abdul Majid Abdul Qadir, Miller expressed in press statements on Saturday willingness of U.S Embassy in particular and US Government in general to provide every facility for the flow of this commodity from Sudan to the United States, noting the need to revive the idea of the joint Sudanese-American businessmen Council to take care of business issues and common interests in the agricultural products sector, machinery production and promised to consider the complexities of the policy of the economic embargo on Sudan. Sanctions on Sudan began after the country gave refuge to various militant Islamists in the early 1990’s, most notably Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, who lived in Khartoum from 1991 to 1996. In 1997 United States President Bill Clinton imposed trade restrictions on Sudan due to Khartoum’s support for international terrorism, violations of human rights, and attempting to destabilize neighboring governments, such as the assassination attempt on the life of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Addis Ababa. In November 2012 Sudan renewed calls for serious talks about ending sanctions and removing Khartoum from a list of state sponsors of terrorism, despite US President Barack Obama extended the trade embargo that month. Sudan continues to appear on a list of state sponsors of terrorism. However, in July 2012 a US report, said that Khartoum had been "a cooperative counter-terrorism partner" in 2011.
