advertisement Newport News police have charged a 49-year-old man in connection to the stabbing death of his wife Monday.
About 1:45 p.m., officers were called to Sherwood Arms Apartments in the 3700 block of Sherwood Place, where they found a woman suffering from what appeared to be stab wounds, according to Newport News Police Department spokesman Harold Eley.
The woman, identified by police as Jamila Adam, 23, of the first block of Colony Road, was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead at 2:38 p.m.
Police said the woman was visiting someone at the apartment complex when her husband came to the area, according to Eley.
Eley said the two got into an argument, said to be domestic-related, and the man pulled out a knife and stabbed her outside the apartment.
The man, Barharadin Juma, also of the first block of Colony Road, was charged with murder and use of a knife in commission of a felony, Eley said. He was in the custody of the Newport News City Jail without bond Monday night.
Police were told the couple came from Sudan, Eley said.
Michael Martin and Karen Jackson, residents at the apartment complex, were outside Monday afternoon a few hours after the stabbing took place, trying to find out what was going on.
“It’s crazy, right underneath our nose,” Jackson said.
Martin said he returned home about 3 p.m. from lunch and was surprised to see the police presence in the area.
“This is bad. This is a really sad day,” he said.
Another resident, Chris Patterson, said he was at work when his wife called him about the incident.
“My heart just dropped,” he said. “I’ve been here for seven years and nothing like that’s happened until today.”
Patterson said it made him concerned about his family’s well-being.
“You worry about your safety, you worry about your family’s safety, you worry about your kids’ safety,” he said. “You worry about everybody’s safety that’s in your own neighborhood.”
