Sudan releases detained Umma Party leader Al-Mahdi
|
Khartoum-A committee of Sudanese national figures succeeded Sunday in mediating the release of the chairman of the National Umma Party Al-Sadeq Al-Mahdi. In a press conference at Taiba Press Center in Khartoum, the committee announced that the release was a result to a series of meetings with the political leadership in the country and chairman of the Umma Party Al-Sadeq Al-Mahdi. The committee, which comprises different political and religious figures and leaders from the ruling National Congress Party, said that it will work on releasing the chairman of the Sudanese Congress Party Ibrahim Al-Sheikh and the whole political detainees. The Sudanese security arrested the chairman of the Umma party Al-Mahdi on May 17 after he criticized government forces known as Rapid Support Forces as committed violations against civilians in Darfur. The security service filed cases against Al-Mahdi at the crimes against the state attorney according to which Al-Mahdi was sent to Kober Prison since May 17. The Umma Party announced the suspension of the dialogue with the government immediately after the arrest of its leader. The Sudanese authorities released the leader of the opposition Umma Party Al-Sadeq Al-Mahdi from the federal Kober prison on Sunday after a month of arrest after an agreement by the President of the Republic Omer Al-Bashir on mediation led by national figures to release Al-Mahdi who was in jail for accusing the Rapid Support Forces of committing violations. In a move seemed as an officially apology, the Umma Party central authority issued a statement saying that what was mentioned by the man on the Rapid Support Forces was based on complaints which are not all necessarily right. The statement requested the cancellation of the case. The statement has affirmed support to the armed and regular forces and their considerable national role, reiterating that what has been said by Al-Mahdi on the Rapid Support Forces is based on complaints and
