Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) approved on Saturday night at its General Convention the incumbent president Omer Al-Bashir as its leader and the party’s candidate for the country's elections slated for next April Al-Bashir won by 94 percent after having 4,425 out of 4,606 votes. The 70-year-old career soldier took power in a coup, and there had been doubts about whether he would run again in the controversial election, slated for April. In his speech following his selection Al-Bashir vowed to end the sanctions-hit country's isolation, saying recent visits to regional powers Egypt and Saudi Arabia proved that ties were improving. "We promise you that Sudan will not be isolated, and our visit to Saudi Arabia removed doubts that our trip to Egypt had returned matters to normal," he said at the closing of the ruling National Congress Party's conference. The NCP General Convention also selected the members of Shura National Council which held its first meeting today. It also approved recommendations of NCP committees in a number of areas, including political, economic, foreign relations, social media and other relevant areas.
