South Africa had to arrest Sudanese president when he was there: ICC chief prosecutor

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, has said that South Africa government had to arrest the Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir when he was there attending African Union Summit. South African court issued an interim order two weeks ago preventing Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir leaving the country after the International Criminal Court (ICC) called for his arrest at a summit of African leaders in Johannesburg. Al-Bashir is accused in an International Criminal Court arrest warrant of war crimes and crimes against humanity over atrocities in the Darfur conflict. “I was very disappointed about the unwillingness of South Africa to affect the arrest of Omar al-Bashir, I believe that in this particular case there was no ambiguity. The obligation of South Africa under the Rome Statute was really clear. What they had to do is to arrest and surrender Omar al-Bashir to the ICC.” Bensouda told Al Jazeera on Saturday In The Hague, Bensouda and her team of analysts and investigators try to bring those responsible for the most heinous crimes to justice. It is a seemingly endless process. "What motivates us always is to have that opportunity to give a voice to the victims," she says. Critics say the international court has had such little impact that it is in danger of becoming obsolete. Others, however, point to the move just this last week by Palestinians to bring charges of war crimes against the Israeli government as an example how vital the ICC still can be. According to the United Nations, more than 300,000 people have been killed in the conflict in Darfur and fighting has forced some 2.5 million people to flee their homes. Khartoum, however, disputes the figures, estimating the death toll at no more than 10,000.
