Torrents and floods destroyed thousands of homes in the Nierteti camps for the displaced in Central Darfur last week.
“Heavy rains and floods destroyed more than 2,000 homes entirely in the two camps in Nierteti in the past week. At least 3,000 houses were damaged, a resident of Nierteti camp North told Radio Dabanga.
She said that the affected are now living in the open, and urged relief organisations to intervene, and provide tarpaulins and tents.
North Darfur camps
In Naivasha camp for the displaced in Shangil Tobaya, North Darfur, 150 homes collapsed owing to the heavy rainfall last week.
Residents of Zamzam camp, in El Fasher locality, North Darfur, complained to Radio Dabanga about the outbreak of “malaria and night fever”. “There is a proliferation of mosquitoes, because of the accumulation of rainwater.”
They appealed through Radio Dabanga to the local authorities to accelerate the drainage of rainwater, by cleaning the ditches and gutters, and open sewers, and ponds
