Darfur and S. Kordofan witness food and water gap amid rise in displaced persons

Khartoum-Since last January, the number of the displaced persons in Darfur reached around 306.64 persons. Around Whilst 118.732 persons have returned, 187.908 are still displaced. As wide areas in South Kordofan state and Darfur suffer from severe shortage in food and drinking water, the International Committee for the Red Cross announced cut of its staff. The UN office of Humanitarian Affairs said that around 38.000 persons and the comers from South Sudan state need humanitarian assistance in West Kordofan State. In a weekly bulletin on the humanitarian situations in Sudan, the UN office of Humanitarian Affairs said that there are wide gaps in terms of the shortage in health service facilities and the drinking water in Rashad town in South Kordofan. In the same context, the chairman of the farmers union in North Darfur told Al-Ray-am newspaper yesterday that there is a food gap in the food grain in the state especially the southern and western areas, expecting rise in the crisis if the authorities did not interfere urgently. The ICRC has earlier said that the suspension of its activities in Sudan for more than 3 months would have serious consequences on the Sudanese people in the war hit areas. The ICRC said that around a half and million persons in Sudan received its assistance last year. The ICRC affirmed reduction of its Sudanese staff by 30% because of lack of any progress with regard to the resumptions of its activities in Sudan.
