World Bank grants Sudan $ 3.5 million as support for social protection project

Khartoum, Feb. 10 (SUNA) - The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning signed Wednesday a grant agreement at an amount of $ 3.5 million with the World Bank for the project of social protection. The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Badr-Eddin Mahmoud Abbas signed on behalf of the Government of Sudan and the World Bank's Country Director signed for the Bank. The finance minister said that the project was a pilot aiming at the North Kordofan State by providing direct support to the poor families through two components; the first component to be implemented by the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security in the field of institutional support and improvement of the methods targeting poor families and the second component through the Ministry of Finance, and Economic Planning by the former Community Support Unit via the methodology of Work for Cash to help poor families. This came when he addressed a ceremony on signing the World Bank's grant to the project of social protection, in the presence of the State Minister for Finance Majdi Hassan Yassin. The Minister of Finance referred to the World Bank's cooperation with Sudan through provision of support in the field of education. For his part, the World Bank's Country Director in Khartoum promised to extend technical support to Sudan in various fields, revealing that the social protection project is a grant from the World Bank to help poor families in Sudan. Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Security Ali Mohamed Khair explained that the Document of Social Security Network's Project supports the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security, adding that his ministry had provided the requirements of the project, stressing that the Social and Security's Network is considered a as a pioneering expertise and that it leads the support recipient to the stage of production and investment.
