Sudan's Oil Minister, Makawi Mohammed Awad, announced that his country hopes to increase oil production by drilling and exploration some areas including the troubled region of Darfur. “Our plan for this year is to raise production to 140,000 barrels per day" (bpd) up from 120,000 bpd in 2014, Awad said in an interview with AFP on Tuesday. After the secession of South Sudan in July 2011 Sudan lost 75% of its oil production causing high inflation and Sudanese currency lost more than 60% of its value compared with the U.S dollar Sudan’s Minister pointed out that the oil sector was affected by U.S sanctions "The American sanctions led to the withdrawal of some companies from the blocks," Awad added, without naming the firms. In 1997, the US imposed a trade embargo on Sudan over charges including rights abuses, and Awad said sanctions were still harming the sector.
