Rebel fighters of the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdel Wahid El Nur (SLM-AW), claim to have killed 95 army and militia troops in battles in the area west of Jebel Marra on Saturday and Sunday.
SLM-AW spokesman, Mustafa Tambour, told Dabanga that the first battle began at about 7 am, after the government forces left the area of Golo to start an offensive against the rebel base at Sur Reng.
“The SLM rebel forces killed 72 government and militia troops, destroyed four of their vehicles, and seized a number of weapons, and ammunition. The militiamen returned and withdrew into the town of Golo,” he reported.
The rebel spokesman said that the government and militia troops today again attempted to attack Sur Reng. “Our fighters killed 23 government and militia troops. The others fled the battlefield again towards Golo, leaving the bodies of their dead and large quantities of weapons and ammunition. We lost three combatants, and 11 others were wounded.”
He added that an Antonov dropped 12 bombs near Sur Reng and villages in the vicinity. “The bombardments led to the destruction of three small villages, and the injury of seven civilians.”
