Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-The head of the Egyptian Al-Wafd Party, Dr. Sayed Al-Badawi, has revealed an Sudanese-Egyptian agreement on the issue of Halaib by 99%, calling on the two Governments to the importance of seeking communication on what is agreed upon through solutions that can bring mutual benefit to the two countries, Al-Badawi told Sudanese “Al-Shirouq” T.V channel on Saturday that issue of Halaib has many solutions, including the areas can be free trade zone between the two countries without any problems, pointing out that the issue of Halaib has existed since 1954 and have not and will not constitute obstruction in the process and evolution of Sudanese-Egyptian relations media said that some Egyptians Al-Badawi added that some Egyptian media personnel are ignorant of the nature of governance and the State in Sudan and the nature of the relationship between the two peoples. The area known as the Halaib triangle is a small area along the Egypt-Sudan border which has been a point of dispute for over six decades. Under British administration the Sudan-Egypt border was drawn up on the 22nd parallel in 1899. Sudan was given the Halaib area north of the border to use for farming while Egypt was given Bir Tawil, a small area south of the border, to administer in 1902. When Sudan gained independence in 1956 Egypt recognized the 22nd parallel as the official boundary, while Sudan remained steadfast on controlling Halaib. In 2000 Sudan withdrew troops from the area, yet Al-Bashir said the area is still Sudanese by law.
