Sudan and Qatar sign (MoU) on military cooperation
|
Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-Sudan and Qatar signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on military cooperation on Sunday in the Qatari capital Doha during the visit made by Sudan’s Defence Minister Abdel Rahim Hussein. Hussein discussed with Qatari Minister of Defence, Major General Hamad Bin Ali Al Attiyah areas of the cooperation between the two countries and ways to enhance and develop them, especially in the military one. Sudan’s Defense Minister praised the brotherly relations with Qatar, saying it further developed thanks to the directives of the leadership of the two countries and the common desire to upgrade them to a higher level as in the interests of the two brotherly peoples. He emphasized that the signing of (MoU) represents a major step in strengthening ties between Doha and Khartoum, in particular between the two armed forces. Qatar has been one of the few countries where Sudan enjoys relatively warm relations with. For years the rich Arab Gulf state has hosted peace talks between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebel groups which eventually resulted in signing of a peace accord in 2011. Furthermore, Qatar also pledged $2 billion last year in the form of investments and purchases of government bonds to help its beleaguered economy reeling from the impact of losing the oil-rich south last year.
