The parliamentary committee tasked with amending the 2005 Interim Constitution, in cooperation with the Council of States, has completed the incorporation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).
Tahani Toreldaba, heading the parliamentary Justice and Legislation Committee, explained at a press conference in Khartoum on Saturday that the Subcommittee assigned with the incorporation of the 2011 DDPD text in the Constitution had faced “some real challenges”.
“The DDPD consists of 78 articles and 487 items, apart from a number of schedules, which all should be incorporated in the Constitution.” She pointed out that the Committee had found a huge number of articles that already existed in the Interim Constitution, adding that “we incorporated the Document’s text in a way similar to the incorporation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement into the Constitution”.
Toreldaba stated that the text of the Doha peace agreement has “become part of the Interim Constitution with the exception of articles contradicting the Constitution”. “The Interim Constitution now exists of 227 articles.”
