Students in Sennar State went out on Thursday to demonstrate against the soaring prices of consumer goods, and the entire lack of bread in the area.
A citizen from El Masmom, on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, told Radio Dabanga that the demonstration of secondary school students managed to reach downtown El Masmom, where the police dispersed them by force.
The listener added that there is no flour in El Masmom. The price of half a litre of cooking oil has risen to SDG 30 ($5.22), a kilo of sugar to SDG 12 ($2.10), and the price of a kilo of meat now costs SDG 60 ($10.45). He stressed that the citizens of El Masmom suffer extremely from the soaring prices, as the roads linking the town with other towns in Sennar are closed.
