Mabior Garang is still in Central Prison in Addis Ababa
|
For Immediate Release 29/08/2014 I want to inform the people of South Sudan that the public statement of comrade Ateny Wek Ateny on August, 26, was not a denial of arrest of Mabior Garang, who was caught with a gun at President Kiir’s hotel in Addis Ababa. Mr. Ateny Wek did not deny the fact that Mabior Garang was arrested by the Ethiopian Security in relation to the pistol caught in his bag. Comrade Ateny was denying whether the President was harmed personally. In fact, Mabior was arrested prior to executing his plan. It is true that the President was not personally harmed as Ateny said. The Press Release I issued on August, 25, did mention that the President was safe: “The Government of South Sudan is appealing to the people of South Sudan to stay calm. We are assuring the public that our President is safe”. Looking at what Ateny Wek said and the Press Release I issued on August, 25th, one can conclude that there is no contradiction at all between what I said and what comrade Ateny talked about. The rebels who are attempting to take his words out of context to cover-up the arrest of Mabior Garang will feel ashamed when independent journalists prove very soon that he was indeed arrested. The facts remained as they are that Mr. Mabior Garang de Mabior is still in Central Prison in Addis Ababa because he was caught with a pistol at Ellily International Hotel. The Ethiopian Security personnel kept him in jail because the reason why he carried a gun was aimed at harming somebody. The interrogation of August, 25th established a motive to harm the President because Mabior admitted that he has grievances against the President. His words led Ethiopian Security personnel to conclude that he was destined to harm the President of the Republic of South Sudan although he did not execute the plan. The denial of Mr. Mabior Garang that he was not arrested was designed to deceive the public. If Mr. Mabior was not arrested, he could have called a Press Conference to prove to the world that he was not detained. Since August, 25th, nobody or a journalist saw Mabior Garang in person in Addis Ababa. That confirmed the truth that he was indeed arrested. The fact that Mabior Garang used Facebook in jail is not a proof that he was not arrested. I would like to inform the media that Mabior Garang is permitted by the Ethiopian Security to use his phone and internet in prison. He is being treated as a Very Important Person in the Central Prison in Addis Ababa. Therefore, his Facebook and internet response does not necessarily mean he is not in jail as he wants the public to believe. The journalists who want to ascertain the truth should go to Addis and find him in person to prove my case.
